But the biggest problem I have had is the difference in time. Everyone in Detroit is on the move— in a hurry, rushed, afraid of being late. In Hobbs, on the other hand(相反;另一方面), no one really cares what time it is. No one seems concerned about getting to places on time. For example, soon after we arrived in Hobbs we were invited to a party. My husband and I arrived at the party on time. The door was opened by a surprised hostess, who, dressed in a robe, was straightening the living room(整理客厅) and preparing some last-minute snacks for the party. She very graciously invited us in and explained that the other guests would be arriving soon (“soon” turned out to be almost an hour later). When the other guests finally arrived, an hour after the appointed time(约定的时间), the party began, although guests continued to arrive late into evening. I now realize that when people in Hobbs say a party begins at a certain time, they don’t really mean at that exact time. People just aren’t concerned about being punctual.
