Two different constructions are allowed:
Chain Sequins (new standard for new type of artwork)
Chain sequins are allowed. Sequin tape is used and sequins are cut as they are set on with an embroidery machine. These will be in a continuous pattern / row (i.e.: fish scale, etc.).
The only thread approved for this construction is Coats or A & E embroidery thread (tex # TBA by Evelyn).
Hand-Stitched Sequins & Beads (standard since 2001, remains unchanged)
Hand-stitched sequins must be applied in layers, one on top of the other, of at least two layers. We have found that the more layers, the less sequin bursting.
Sequins must have three stitches - edge to center, center to edge – called a “Y” stitch. Sequins in shapes other than round may require additional stitches.
Sequins and beads must have knots behind every third sequin/bead. This will ensure that if one breaks off, the most that will follow are an additional two.
The only thread approved for this construction is Coats Epic or A & E Perma Core (Polyester Corespun) with a thickness of tex #60 or 80. Tex #80 is preferred, but #60 will be allowed when the bead opening is too small for the 80 to fit through it.
Testing:
If no small parts release under 4 lb. torque and/or 21 lb./10 sec. tension: PASS.
If thread breakage under 4 lb. torque and/or 21 lb./10 sec. tension: FAIL.
If base fabric rupture under 4 lb. torque and/or 21 lb./10 sec. tension: FAIL.
If sequin bursts at less than 12 lb. tension: FAIL. If sequin bursts at 12 lb. tension or higher, or if sequin or bead is not graspable, proceed to 25 launderings. Then, if no sequins or beads become detached after 25 launderings, but the component which released in torque and tension testing fits into small parts cylinder under 1 lb. weight, and a small parts warning hang tag is present: PASS. If sequins or beads become detached after 25 launderings: FAIL.
