齐大饥,黔敖为食于路,以待饿者而食之.有饿者蒙袂辑履,贸贸然来,黔敖左奉食,右执饮曰:"嗟!来食."扬其目而视之曰:"予惟不食嗟来之食,以至于斯也."从而谢焉,终不食而死.曾子闻之曰:"微与,其嗟也可去,其谢也可食"
There was a severe famine(大饥)in Qi。Qin Ao had food ready at the roadside for the starvelingers to eat。A famished man appeared stagerringly(贸贸然,摇晃着),coveredhis face with the sleeve because of shame, and his shoes in hand as he was too weak to wear them(蒙面辑履,略加解释于译文中)。
He was halted by Qin Ao, who held food in his left hand and drink in the right,saying:"Holla,come,you。" The man raised his eyes and looked at him,"I become thus only because I don't want to eat anything given in such a manner,"he said。
So Qin Ao made an immediate apology to him for not being so polite at first,but still the man refused to take any food and died with hunger(不食而死,饿死。
) at last。 On hearing this, Zeng Zi said,"It's a pity for him to do so。(微与,不必啦。他这么做是遗憾的事) He might have gone away when offered food as alms,but he should have eaten when apologized。

A rich man named Qin Ao prepared some food at the roadside, intending to serve those hungry。 A starveling, with his sleeves covering his eyes and walking in a feeble way, came suddenly。
Qin Ao, with some food in his left hand and some soup in his right hand, said rudely:"Come on, take the food!" The starveling raised his eyes and stared at him, saying:"I never take any food handed out in contempt, that's why I falled to this position!" Hearing this, Qin Ao,following the starveling, apologized for his rudeness。
But the starveling still refused to eat, and he died at last。 The Scholar Zeng Zi hear about this story and sighed: "Oh, he should not have done in that way。
He could refuse at Qin Ao's contempt, but he could also take the food after the apology。" 。
