•   一。在英语中用来修饰限定某一个名词或代词的从句称之为定语从句。如:
  The computer that/which I bought last year works very well。在这个句子中that/which I bought last year 为定语从句。
    它修饰限定了前面的名词computer。
  二。定语从句分限制性和非限制性两类定语从句。通常我们讲得定语从句大都是以限制性定语从句为主。引导定语从句的连接词有that和which(用来指代事物);that/who/whom用来指代人;whose指代事物和人都可以,只是它要用来修饰其后的名词。
    看下面的例句:
  The computer that/which I bought last year works very well。电脑computer是一个物体,所以连接代词用that/which 。
  Tom is the teacher that/who is popular with the students。
    教师teacher指得是人,所以用that/who 。
  We live in the house whose windows face south。在这个句子中whose引导的定语从句修饰限定了house这个名词,同时又修饰限定了其后面的windows。
    
  三。whom是在定语从句中作动词或介词的宾语时使用。如:
  The teacher (whom) we saw just now teaches us music。在这个句子里代词whom指代的名词teacher是动词saw的宾语,所以用whom。
    口语中也可以用that/who。但是更多的情况是省略。
  四。非限制性定语从句通常与被修饰词之间没有很紧密的关系,只是起到一个补充说明更多的信息内容的作用。与被修饰词之间常常用","分开。翻译成汉语时,常译成两句话。如:
  I've made good friends with Tom, whose father is a manager。
    "我与 Tom成了好朋友,他的父亲是经理"。
  五。修饰表示时间,地点的名词时,如果这个被修饰的名词在定语从句中说明得是表示时间或地点的状语,要用副词when 或 where。如:
  Last week I went back to the village where I grew up。
    "上周我回到我长大的村子里。"
  句子中被定语从句修饰的名词 village 是 I grew up 的地点状语。所以用where引导定语从句。
  I still remember the days when we lived together in the countryside。
    "我仍然记得我们一起在乡下生活的那些日子。'
  when we lived together in the countryside = Those days we lived together in the countryside。
