色 = shape /form ?
Can 色 have the meaning of shape, as in the Buddhist Heart sutra 色就是空,空就是色? Is it an ancient, obsolete meaning ?
First of all, the original sentence is not 色就是空,空就是色。 In the《摩诃般若波罗蜜多心经》, it is written as 色即是空,空即是色。 色 here refers to the ‘phenomenon’, while 空 is the ‘noumenon’ or ‘thing-in-itself’。
色即是空 means “the phenomenon ‘色’ is the expression or rendition of the noumenon ‘空’。” So 色 is used somewhat in the sense of ‘expression’ like 神色 or the “appearance, outlook (of things)” as in 景色、暮色。
By the way, 即是 *does not* mean 就是。 即 here is used in the sense of ‘near’ as in 若即若离、可望 不可即。
In most English translations of the Heart Sutra it is translated as FORM.
“空”可视作西方哲学里的“理念”即Idea “色”可视作“形式”即shape/form
