Between 1952 and 1990s, for about 40 years, the majority of college 
students received free educations thanks to the huge subsidies to 
colleges from the central government。

   At present, a portion of college 
students, especially those from the impoverished regions of the 
country, is feeling the almost impossible burden of paying off the

As a reult, the Beijing Municipal government recently put forth 
regulations regarding the cost of college education that require the 
tuition should be set within the range that is reasonable and 
affordable。

from low-income families are able to go to college。
