1. For the first year of your project, calculate the sum of all of the following budget items:
* All salaries and wages
* All fringe benefits
* All materials and supplies being purchased
* All services
* All travel
* All subgrants and subcontracts less than $25,000 each. [If you have subgrants or subcontracts that are larger than $25,000, don't include the portion(s) over that $25,000 limit.]
2. The sum you get is called the "Total Direct Cost."
3. Now multiply the Total Direct Cost by the appropriate Overhead Rate. For example, if you are performing all research on campus for an academic department such as Chemistry, you'll use 39.8% as your Overhead Rate.
4. If your project will continue beyond one year, you must repeat this calculation for each separate year.
