Signal Processing
Signal processing is included as a separate heading
because, in a world of pervasive computing and embedded
systems, it is increasingly an integral part of a product. At
one extreme, signal processing may be central to producing
information for presentation to the user. At a basic
level, filtering, interpolation, and prediction are required in
subsystems. Here again is an opportunity for an engineer
trained in systems analysis and signal processing to contribute
to technical developments such that the final system
has the required performance. As in system
functionality and control, it is often possible for the signal
analyst to predict whether or not overall performance targets
can be met. Again, experience tells of ambitious projects
that have been proposed on the basis that cheap
hardware could be used because sophisticated signal processing
could compensate for the hardware’s shortcomings.
This is rarely true, and there are many examples of the
consequences. On the other hand, a systems view of such
a project could establish whether signal-processing algorithms
could compensate for simplified hardware.
