1、 to continue指代snow及the school closures两方面,孩子们企盼雪一直下和学校继续关门（放假），作者（父母）则企盼slush(雪开始消融）;
2、在那个人们为保住工作而忧心忡忡的年代, 学校关门的成本是巨大的。
  (联系下文就不难理解,下文大意是"由于学校关门造成孩子们上不了学而待在家里,不能确保孩子(自己在家）安全的家长们只能待在家里不上班（照顾孩子）,This translates all too quickly into orders(订单） unfulfilled and contracts prejudiced(家长们上不了班)迅速地导致了订单无法完成及合同受到影响(prejudic 动词"削弱"、'受到影响"）,
3、XX reckons that by the end of the week our trembling economy will have suffered losses worth some XXbn。
  XX认为截至周末我们不稳定的经济将会遭受XXX亿损失(bn=billion十亿)。

  当孩子长大时,当他们请病假不上班时，到那时，我们才想知道问为什么(为时已晚）(then,when。。。。when。。。。we wonder why用得很出彩，有力度又恰到好处,作者是想表达一种忧心、无奈、愤怒又有前瞻性的想法:"与其亡羊补牢不如未雨绸缪"。
