"the child" and "their talent" 在这都是“泛指”的词类， 并不是指某一个特定的“人”或“天赋/天分”。 “the child" 是泛指“儿童“ 这个群体（a "group"), 而不是指某一个“单一的“，“特定的" 孩子。
而因为这里是在讨论儿童这个“Group"的“泛指的“，“概括的“ 天赋/天分，所以用的是 “Their talent" 。 其实英文文法有很多的不合理的地方， 多是以特例来处里。我想这是源于英文，不同于其他的欧系语言， 英文受到外来语的影响较多。
纵观英国历史，也很容易看出英文曾经受到过那些语系的影响。 我有些欧洲的朋友也曾说英文其实很难学。 其实也由于英文文法很多的不合理性，在”儿童“这个词上“the child" and "Children" 都可“泛指”儿童，所以它们是可以通用的。

我也觉得应该用children，难道是习惯用法。文化差异。渴望来高人解答。
