The Nabis were a group of Post-Impressionist avant-garde artists in France who paid special attention to the emotional use of colour in paintings。
The Nabis, with Bonnard and Vuillard as their prominent figures, have acculturated within the impressionist tradition, debased from the constraints of the classical tradition and infused art with a more intimate level of personal expression。
They have all agreed on the use of strong forms and vivid colors, like Bonnard's simple arrangement of unblended but vivid colors and Vuillard's delicate handling of color harmony。
They have brought about a new depth of richness in colour to paintings。 As for the artistic style, the Nabis emphasized on the pursuit of architectural setting and decorative character in the picture plane。
The flat surface pattern of the Nabis has almost deviated completely from the meticulous and detail-oriented classical approach。
This liberation in style signified an emancipation of emotional expression through the use of colour。 The Nabis paintings stressed on the creation of an inner poetic reality and the pursuit of emotive decorative effect as well as symbolic expression on a flat surface。
The artist's own "subjective deformation" has facilitated the deliberation of personal inspiration。 The Nabis, often regarded as Post-Impressionist successors, have further enhanced the Impressionist's loaded shadow technique and the stress on tone colour。
At the same time, they were also regarded as the forerunners and inspirators of the Fauvist movement。
